Reflection: Fiction Analysis

Directions: look back on the entire fiction unit and the analysis you just wrote. What new aspects of fiction did you discover, either through class discussions, the blogs or the readings? Be specific about the lessons and the modes. What do you still wish you knew about fiction? Do you feel like you were prepared to write your analysis? What do you think might have helped you become more prepared?

Reflection due by 5pm on Saturday, November 1st. Write your blog after you have dropped your paper.

No reply from classmates.

  1. Reflecting on the fiction unit I feel that I have a grasp on analyzing different styles of writing. I discovered how much setting and character relate to each other and that a dynamic writer can develop an interesting story this way. It was interesting discussing audience, which is usually the middle class. Although these seem pretty obvious aspects of writing, I had never given it much thought, and think they are interesting. Writing the analysis felt rushed to me, I did learn about different aspects of fiction, but definitely struggle when it comes to writing.

  2. The new aspects of fiction that I discovered mostly through class discussions were more about vocabulary in short stories. I didn’t know that a protagonist could be an evil character until this unit. I also didn’t know about all of the different types of narration, and how authors use narration to develop the aspects of their stories such as character and theme. I wish I knew more about fiction from different parts of the world, and how it is similar and different than American fiction. I felt more prepared to write the short story analysis than I did the poem explication, but would have appreciated another week to complete the analysis. Having another week would have allowed me to really revise and edit my paper until it was perfect. I did enjoy the in- class session of working on our papers, and how it allowed me to clarify things with the help of my classmates and professor. I would appreciate time in class to work on future assignments before they are due.

  3. There was an extensive amount of information to take in for this unit. I never realized just how much work went into short stories. Mostly, I learned about aspects such as strategies and different elements of fiction. I found it difficult to fluctuate between observing the context deeply and just examining what was right in front of me. I thought the class discussions helped vastly for this unit because of the large amount of information. The different impressions of the stories made it easier to understand various elements. I enjoyed analyzing “Romero’s Shirt,” I thought the story had a very good message, and examining the context for symbolism, plot, and character was enjoyable. I’m sure there is much more to learn about fiction. In the future, all the aspects that I have learned about short stories, I should have more time to practice and comprehend. I did not feel as prepared as I did for my poetry analysis, the writing process was much more difficult because it felt like there was so much to analyze. I think that since there was a lot of information to take in for fiction, that it would have helped to have some more time in the unit to completely understand all of the elements as they stand on their own.

  4. As someone who really enjoys short stories, this unit was very interesting to me. It helped me realize what characters can mean in a story past just playing a role in the action, even if they are just minor characters. It has also helped me look for symbolism in stories, something that I have always had trouble with. I felt well prepared to write my analysis, and I feel I wrote a much more well-organized essay this time around.

  5. I really enjoyed this unit. Besides "A Rose for Emily" I hadn't read any of the stories before, and I enjoyed reading them. What I learned and am now slowly getting (for some reason) is all about the different narrating styles. I never knew how important the narrating style was to the story. Along with the point of view for the narrator. I liked learning it and I now see how important it is to the story. So along with being the one thing I learned it is the one thing I don't quite understand and am still learning how to understand. I did feel well prepared to write my essay even though I am not sure how good it turned out.

  6. By studying fiction, I was better able to enjoy the smaller details that lent themselves to a cohesive and engaging story. I used to think that point of view and setting, while interesting, weren’t that important for an immersive story. However, through this unit, I’ve realized that even changing the amount of omniscience the narrator is capable of can have a huge impact on the way the views the characters, tone, and theme of the story he/she is reading. I still wish that I could learn about how different eras produced different kinds of fiction

I felt very prepared to write the essay, having written a poem explication and midterm analysis before this. Style and tone are elements of fiction that I understand quite well, and translating hose elements to character and narration was an easy step. Of course, I could have also read another analysis of “Soldier’s Home” to help me better understand the story, but then I would run the risk of copying ideas instead of coming to my own conclusions.

  7. I enjoyed this section because I enjoy reading short stories and it made me realize how much narration does affect a story. I use to just read stories and not look into them but now I look at symbolism and the way the story is written from the language they use to the overall theme etc. I feel that as the teacher you taught us and prepared us to write the essay but on my own accord I did not feel ready to write the essay.

  8. While reading all these fiction stories, I’ve never considered point of view all too much. At first I was aware of the general idea, now I realize it holds a lot more value to any fiction piece. The only thing I wish I would have known more about is organizing every element to each story. Personally that’s why I felt unprepared for the analysis. Maybe if I would have asked more questions I would have had a better sense of how to stack those parts with fiction to be something simple and less complicated.
